Bakewell in Bloom
RHS ‘Britain in Bloom’ is one of the largest horticultural campaigns in Europe and promotes the following values: Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and Community Participation.
Each year Bakewell enters the East Midlands regional competition in the small town category, the judging taking place in July. The aim of the campaign is to encourage the improvement of our surroundings through good horticultural practice and to achieve a litter free, sustainable environment for the benefit of locals, visitors and businesses alike. Not only the delightful retail sector of the town is considered but public and residential gardens and the natural environment – trees and wildflowers in the area, in fact all aspects of horticulture and landscape are considered.
Bakewell in Bloom works in cooperation with the local authorities, community groups including allotments, floral art, wildlife and environmental organisations, schools, care homes, local business and with all who have any interest in gardening whether a window box or the Haddon Estate!
2014 saw all the work rewarded with a Silver Gilt Award, just a few marks short of the next level of excellence. This year they are definitely “Growing for Gold!”

It’s all very informal and a great way to take an interest in various aspects of gardening and the countryside.
